Snow Monkey? 白のガンダルフ Gandalf the White??

I have changed my hair-colour since my grey hair is too much to hide. Along with this, I started growing a moustache and a beard. All of my friends and even my separated wife seemed to like my new appearance. Petra, Czech friend said that my photos on the FACEBOOK reminded her ‘Gandalf the White’ in ‘The Lord of the Rings’.
Some close friends of mine know that I love images of Japanese snow monkeys in hot springs. In fact, the idea of my new look came from those monkeys and other arctic animals.

About Gas

Hi, I am a wood-fire potter, living and working in the Japanese tradition in Tring, Hertfordshire (UK). Following mediaeval potter's wisdom, I design and build simple wood-fired kilns called 'anagama' for long period of firing and 'raku-gama' for quick (glazed tea bowl) firing. My anagama firing usually takes 9 - 10 days.

Hajime Mashita, My name is Nick and I have just had a good look at your web site and felt inspired to learn about your life here in the UK. I`ve just returned to England after living 18 years in Okayama Ken. I arrived there in 92 and became very interested at First, Bizen Yaki, then started to blend clay from Saijo,Hiroshima and Bizen. I built a junior 6 chamber Anagama in 98 and opened my own Kobo in 2005. I have recently shipped over some of my work and hope to have an exhibition in both London and East Sussex in the near future. Its great to see that you are positive and active with your pottery and in the future, if you are interested, may be we could meet each other… If I dont hear from you, Gambate ! Kimishima San..

Thanks for your comment. Do you have some images of your own work? I am very much interested in what sort of pots you have made so far.
Nick, how old are you? Everyone seems to be younger than my age these days. Although I keep my spirit young, my body keeps telling me opposite.
Looking forward to hearing from you again some time.

      • Dear Gas San, Just now found your reply to a message I sent you a long time ago…so sorry as I thought I may have given you my contact details back then. My e-mail address is and my website is I am also on facebook and have a few photos of my kiln and pots. You can also look up Nick Jennings unglazed pottery and something will come up. I am organizing an exhibition in London which I think will be late this year in Hammersmith. I will be returning to Japan with my family next year and continuing with my pots and life style ! The Uk has not been too kind for me and I miss Japan very much. I am 49 years old and also have a young spirit but not as genki as I was in Japan.. Miss the sashimi and Miso and of course Sake !! Take care and keep in touch if you wish… Regards, Nick Jennings.

Hi Gas, and what about you ???

    • Hi Armelle! Many thanks for contacting me.
I have suffered from terrible insomnia and slight depression for past 2 months. I was seriously lacking sleep and appetite, and it has been rather difficult to cope with the unknown problems. I am not sure but my depression could be caused by a year separation from my wife, or just wet autumn weather.
Zen Philosophy didn’t help me this time because it’s no-one’s fault but me.
But do not worry, I finally managed to pick myself up and ready to face my solitude.
